What a great start this regally bred stallion has made to his stud career… two runners for
a smart debut winner and a first start city placegetter. On March 2 Foreign Christmas
faced the starter for the first time at Terang, racing away to an easy win.
And on May 20 at Sandown Mi Kerida – bred by Larneuk and sold at the 2008 Premier
for $26,000 – showed great natural speed when fighting on gamely for an encouraging
debut third. Previously winning a Cranbourne trial with ease, she is well regarded
by trainer Ian Hutchins.
Legion is bred for stallion success. He is by Danehill’s most successful sire son
Redoute’s Choice – four times Gr.1 winning sire of 53 stakes winners including
14 Gr.1 winners.
And he is a half brother to the late General Nediym, dual Gr.1 winning sprinter
and sire of 23 individual stakes winners with an outstanding winners-to-runners
strike rate of 65%.
This is a family that just keeps producing topliners – its latest stars the Gr.1 trio
Niconero, Nicconi and Fiumicino and its other members including the big race
winners Horlicks, Military Plume, Brew, Interstellar, Zip Zip Aray, Laelia and Froth.
Trained by Lee Freedman, Legion was well regarded and it was not long after his
impressive 3½ length maiden victory that he headed to Sydney for a tilt at the
major events there. Unfortunately an injury ended the racing career of Legion
but it has now allowed breeders to tap into his stallion potential at a bargain price.
